Yesterday, Walt Disney Pictures debuted the first teaser trailer for their film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine‘s classic musical Into the Woods. In true teaser form, there isn’t much in the way of plot or character development, and there isn’t even any singing, which one would presume should be a major part of the film adaptation of a Sondheim Broadway show.

The musical, which first debuted in 1986, is set in a world where Brother’s Grimm fairy tales exist together, intertwining. Main characters are taken from “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Cinderella”, “Rapunzel”, and several other tales.

Johnny Depp will star in a leading role as The Wolf, although the trailer showed nothing more than his hand for a brief moment. Christine Baranski will play Cinderella’s Stepmother.

Although it is just a teaser trailer, the lack of singing has been disheartening to some musical enthusiasts, especially when combined with swirling rumors that key elements and songs would be cut from the film. But don’t fret, it turns out this is nothing  to worry about. Sondheim himself eventually got the opportunity to view the full rough cut of the movie, and had this to say in a statement posted on Playbill:

…having now seen it a couple of times, I can happily report that it is not only a faithful adaptation of the show, it is a first-rate movie.

And for those who care, as the teachers did, the Prince’s dalliance is still in the movie, and so is “Any Moment.”

Into The Woods opens from Walt Disney Pictures in U.S. theatres on December 25th. What did you think of the trailer? Did it give you chills or do you think it fell flat? Let us know in the comments below!

UPDATE: The full Trailer is here, complete with SINGING!
