The day before Beyoncé‘s Super Bowl Halftime Show performance featuring underground indie band Coldplay and up-and-comer Rihanna, the unstoppable performer has decided to do what she does best: pull a Beyoncé.
Yes, ladies and gentleman, Beyoncé has dropped a long rumored new track, “Formation,” complete with a full video and it’s everything you’d expect. It’s boastful, confident, and fierce. Just how we like our queens. The track is an egotistical piece of braggadocio, a tribute to her Southern swag, and a poignant black-pride anthem. What a way to kick off Black History Month.
“I see it, I want it / I stunt, yeah little hornet / I dream it, I work hard / I grind ‘til I own it,” she sneers. A combination of the breezy swagger of “7/11” and the demanding ferocity of “***Flawless.* Honestly not since “Work Bitch” have we had such a bad bitch ode to work ethic and slayage.
The video is pretty incredible. First off, it features the next descendant of the throne Blue Ivy Carter, who’s about to celebrate her fourth birthday tomorrow, looking radiant and every bit the princess she is. Interspersed are shots of the queen dressed as regally as the world sees her, flexing in a hallway with some “***Flawless”-esque moves. As always, the choreography is on point, innovative, fierce. There’s also imagery of the “don’t shoot” movement, coupled with graffiti of “stop shooting us.”
