Nick Jonas Kicks It up a Few “Levels” on New Single

Nick Jonas certainly proved his post-Jonas Brothers worth with a couple radio hits last year, not to mention his self-titled mainstream debut album that extended his fanbase to the adult world and showcased a collection of songs that make a perfect soundtrack for taking off the purity ring.

He’s not stopping there.

“Levels” is still very much the same territory for Nick, vibing somewhere between “Jealous” and “Teacher,” but that doesn’t mean he’s not providing us with some high quality jams, keeping his kingdom very much alive and poppin’. The house-inflected track is the artist’s most party-ready track yet, sounding like a more futuristic update of Austin Mahone‘s “Dirty Work” (which makes sense: both are produced by The Monsters and the Strangerz and have a writing credit from Talay Riley!) or Olly Murs‘ “Did You Miss Me?” (both also have a writing credit from Sean Douglas) although there’s no denying that Mr. Jonas sounds the most comfortable with taking the reigns on this pop smash. The production is absolutely slick and the “Wilderness” singer’s raw gospel-trained vocals sound amazing gliding over co-producer Ian Kirkpatrick‘s digitized pop soundscape with a funky bass breakdown (with bass singers!) thrown in for good measure.

The song clocks in at a bit under three minutes (the lasting influence of “Pretty Girls“), but it’s sure a fun quickie, and we’d always like to imagine it’s the perfect opportunity for a rap feature to pop in. Nicki Minaj is always a best bet, and we know Nick’s already down for collaborating with Angel Haze, or maybe it’s a great chance for a young star like Becky G to step up to the plate. Who knows what surprises the former Disney star has in store? We just might have to find out when he premieres the video and performs at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 30th, but for now we’re loving the video teasers he’s posting on Instagram showing off his smooth moves.
